Today I watched an episode of ''The last week tonight with John Oliver'' about psychics. To my surprise, such people are becoming more and more popular and influential in United States. They get their own shows in TV and an enormous number of people actually have faith in their power. There was a moment when the host has quoted a survey which had shown that 40% of Americans believe in psychics. As I understood, It was the reason, why he decided to bring this topic up, not beccause it's irrational, absurd and funny, but because it's getting dangerously popular and powerful. The geratest part of a programme was looking into the methods of psychics, which weren't honestly any kind of astonishing spiritualism. So called ''mediums'' have two basic thechniques - cold reading and hot reading. Consequtevely, revealing informations about patients after a research and saying things so probable, they should be true at sam level.

litigation- Nowadays in polish society there is a litigation over a form of sexual education.
insidious- Psychics can be insidious as they use trick in order make a ''reading'' impression.
fend off- Celebrities often fend journalists off.
emboldened- If you're emboldened, there is a factor that encourages you to do sth.

  1. I think the main aim of this episode was to show that psychics are in fact a lucrative business - you can earn loads of money with no investment or skills just because prey on people who are vulnerable.
